Helios: What first inspired you tobecome a tattoo artist, and how did you get started in the industry?
Steve: I saw my first tattoo at seven—a GrimReaper—and knew I wanted to learn how to do that.
Helios: How did competing on Ink Masterchange your career, and what was the biggest lesson you took away from theexperience?
Steve: Competing on Ink Master changed mylife. Winning showcased my style on TV, transforming me from a small-townartist to a known name. The biggest lesson: Do every tattoo as if everyone iswatching.
Helios: What was the most challengingpart of being on Ink Master, and how did you push through to win Season 2?
Steve: The biggest challenge was masteringvarious styles while aligning with clients' visions within limited time frames, usually six hours.
Helios: Looking back, is there a momentfrom the show that stands out as your favorite or most memorable?
Steve: My favorite moments were hanging outwith some really cool people. I've maintained good friendships with many fellowcontestants.
Helios: How has life and businesschanged for you since winning Ink Master?
Steve: Winning made me a kind of celebrity;now, everyone wants to be tattooed by me, appreciating my unique style.
Helios:Yourblack-and-gray realism is widely respected—what drew you to that style, and howhas it evolved over the years?
Steve: I was drawn to black-and-gray realismbecause I loved realistic portraits. Over the years, my style has evolved intosurrealism, combining realism with dreamlike elements.
Helios: What advice do you have foraspiring tattoo artists looking to master realism?
Steve: Take your time and practice on paperbefore skin. Hone your skills through continuous drawing.
Helios: What’s your process fordesigning a tattoo? Do you prefer freehand or stencil work?
Steve: If I'm comfortable with the design, like dark imagery, I prefer freehand for creativity. For realistic or otherstyles, I use stencils to ensure perfection and symmetry.
Helios: Are there any tattoo styles ortechniques you’ve been experimenting with recently?
Steve: I'm currently working onNeo-traditional designs, which I find among the best tattoo styles ever.
Helios: What are your go-to tattoomachines, needles, and inks for creating your signature work?
Steve: I use FK Irons EXO machines and needlesfrom Helios.
Helios:What’sthe biggest mistake you see up-and-coming tattoo artists make?
Steve: Not learning all styles or the historybehind them and sticking to one style without diversifying.
Helios: The tattoo industry is evolvingquickly—how do you see it changing in the next 5–10 years?
Steve: I think it will revert to its roots, where dedicated artists who truly love the craft will persist, as the newergeneration might not endure the hard work required.
Helios: What’s your take oncorporate-backed tattoo supply companies vs. independent manufacturers?
Steve: I prefer independent manufacturers fortheir personal touch and accountability. I like to know I have someone to contact if I have a problem, and I canactually et to have a drink with that person and have a relationship. I don’t like the idea of big corporationsjust making money off of me.
Helios: If you could tattoo anycelebrity or historical figure, who would it be and why?
Steve: So if I could Tattoo any celebrity or historicalfigure I have two answers to this one. The first guy would Tattoo is Jesus, andwhat I would Tattoo on him is ”onlyGod can judge me”, and the second I would Tattoo is the Pope, and I will Tattooon him ”money over bitches” lol
Helios: Do youhave any big projects on the Horizon?
Steve: Bigprojects are I’m going to continue to push the New England Tattoo expo which Ireally love. It’s near and dear to my heart. I’d like to actually do a podcasttoo and not just talk about Tattoos, but also lifestyle. I’d actually love todo a few collaborations. I’m not going to speak about with who yet because I wantto finalize it first, but definitely people who are different than my style. Idon’t really see the point of collaborating with people who actually do thesame style, it doesn’t make that much sense to me.
