Helios Interview with Steve Tefft – Ink Master Season 2 Winner – by Craig Petralia

When it comes to black-and-gray realism, bold creativity, and sheer determination, few artists stand out like Steve Tefft. As the winner of Ink Master Season 2, Steve cemented his place in tattoo history with his incredible attention to detail, fearless approach to challenges, and ability to create stunning, hyper-realistic tattoos under intense pressure.

But his journey didn’t start on reality TV—it began long before, with years of dedication, countless hours of refining his craft, and a passion for pushing the limits of tattoo artistry. Since taking the Ink Master crown, Steve has continued to evolve, inspire, and set new standards in the industry.

In this exclusive interview, we dive deep into his early influences, the highs and lows of competing on Ink Master, the future of tattooing, and his best advice for artists looking to make their mark. Whether you're a longtime fan, a fellow tattoo artist, or someone looking to learn from one of the best, this conversation is packed with insight, honesty, and the signature grit that defines Steve Tefft.

Helios: What first inspired you to become a tattoo artist, and how did you get started in the industry?
Steve: I saw my first tattoo at seven—a Grim Reaper—and knew I wanted to learn how to do that.

Helios: How did competing on Ink Master change your career, and what was the biggest lesson you took away from the experience?

Steve: Competing on Ink Master changed my life. Winning showcased my style on TV, transforming me from a small-town artist to a known name. The biggest lesson: Do every tattoo as if everyone is watching.

Helios: What was the most challenging part of being on Ink Master, and how did you push through to win Season 2?

Steve: The biggest challenge was mastering various styles while aligning with clients' visions within limited time frames, usually six hours.

Helios: Looking back, is there a moment from the show that stands out as your favorite or most memorable?

Steve: My favorite moments were hanging out with some really cool people. I've maintained good friendships with many fellow contestants.

Helios: How has life and business changed for you since winning Ink Master?

Steve: Winning made me a kind of celebrity; now, everyone wants to be tattooed by me, appreciating my unique style.

Helios: Your black-and-gray realism is widely respected—what drew you to that style, and how has it evolved over the years?

Steve: I was drawn to black-and-gray realism because I loved realistic portraits. Over the years, my style has evolved into surrealism, combining realism with dreamlike elements.

Helios: What advice do you have for aspiring tattoo artists looking to master realism?

Steve: Take your time and practice on paper before skin. Hone your skills through continuous drawing.

Helios: What’s your process for designing a tattoo? Do you prefer freehand or stencil work?

Steve: If I'm comfortable with the design, like dark imagery, I prefer freehand for creativity. For realistic or other styles, I use stencils to ensure perfection and symmetry.

Helios: Are there any tattoo styles or techniques you’ve been experimenting with recently?

Steve: I'm currently working on Neo-traditional designs, which I find among the best tattoo styles ever.

Helios: What are your go-to tattoo machines, needles, and inks for creating your signature work?

Steve: I use FK Irons EXO machines and needles from Helios.

Helios: What’s the biggest mistake you see up-and-coming tattoo artists make?

Steve: Not learning all styles or the history behind them and sticking to one style without diversifying.

Helios: The tattoo industry is evolving quickly—how do you see it changing in the next 5–10 years?

Steve: I think it will revert to its roots, where dedicated artists who truly love the craft will persist, as the newer generation might not endure the hard work required.

Helios: What’s your take on corporate-backed tattoo supply companies vs. independent manufacturers?

Steve: I prefer independent manufacturers for their personal touch and accountability. I like to know I have someone to contact if I have a problem, and I can actually et to have a drink with that person and have a relationship. I don’t like the idea of big corporations just making money off of me.

Helios: If you could tattoo any celebrity or historical figure, who would it be and why?
Steve: So if I could Tattoo any celebrity or historical figure I have two answers to this one. The first guy would Tattoo is Jesus, and what I would Tattoo on him is ”only God can judge me”, and the second I would Tattoo is the Pope, and I will Tattoo on him ”money over bitches” lol

Helios: Do you have any big projects on the Horizon?
Steve: Big projects are I’m going to continue to push the New England Tattoo expo which I really love. It’s near and dear to my heart. I’d like to actually do a podcast too and not just talk about Tattoos, but also lifestyle. I’d actually love to do a few collaborations. I’m not going to speak about with who yet because I want to finalize it first, but definitely people who are different than my style. I don’t really see the point of collaborating with people who actually do the same style, it doesn’t make that much sense to me.

Thanks Steve! We appreciate you taking some time to let our readers get to know you on more of a personal level. We’ll keep an eye out to see what you’re up to moving forward!
